Stomach ulcers form when acid comes into contact with unprotected tissues in the lining of the stomach. The healthy stomach protects itself from erosion through a mucosal layer secreted by special cells on the stomach wall. Occasionally however, this protection breaks down for various reasons. The result is basically an open sore that develops on the lining of the stomach. Most people used to think that ulcers were caused by stress or by eating too much spicy food. While either of these can cause more acid in the stomach, it has now been found that most ulcers are caused by H. pylori, but only when certain conditions are present. In fact, many people have H. pylori in their gut, but never develop ulcers.

What causes Stomach Ulcers?

The direct cause of peptic ulcers is the destruction of the gastric or intestinal mucosal lining of the stomach by hydrochloric acid, an acid normally present in the digestive juices of the stomach. Infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori is thought to play an important role in causing both gastric and duodenal ulcers. Helicobacter pylori may be transmitted from person to person through contaminated food and water. Antibiotics are the most effective treatment for Helicobacter pylori peptic ulcers.

Acid Reflux occurs when the tube that you uses to intake the food from the throat to stomach is not strong enough to handle the acid. The food intaken by you is digested by the stomach with the help of an acid produced and stored by it. The stomach walls are built strong enough to store that acid without causing damage.

Here is Remedies for Acid Reflux Disease, Reflux Foods and Side Effects of Antacids.

Injury of the gastric mucosal lining, and weakening of the mucous defenses are also responsible for gastric ulcers. Excess secretion of hydrochloric acid, genetic predisposition, and psychological stress are important contributing factors in the formation and worsening of duodenal ulcers.

Another major cause of ulcers is the chronic use of anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin. Cigarette smoking is also an important cause of ulcer formation and ulcer treatment failure.

Aromatherapy treats mind and body together. The scent of the essential oils used can have a powerful effect on the emotions while the oils’ chemistry affects the body. There are many essential oils that can be used to help you relax or make it easier to get to sleep there are a few that are particularly good in fulfilling those needs.

Here is a description of each scent that make you sleep better:

1. Lavender – helps sooth and calm nerves, reduces tension, insomnia, headaches, and depression. Effects of lavender: Calming, Therapeutic

2. Bergamot comes from citrus fruit rind. It does its job by relieving stress and enabling the subject to relax. It has a lovely citrus scent that will make you feel refreshed and give you that sense of well-being. Interestingly bergamot is the main ingredient in earl grey tea.

3. Sweet Marjoram – helps treat anxiety, headaches, and insomnia. Effects of Sweet Marjoram : Soothing, Warming

4. Roman Chamomile – help relaxation, reduces excessive anxiety, and treats insomnia

Effects: Soothing, Relaxing

5. Sandalwood – promotes relaxation, beneficial for depression, stress, nervous tension, and insomnia Effects of Sandalwood: Warming, Relaxing

6. Mandarin - has two different types of oil, one green and the other red. It has several advantages one of which is that it is gentle enough that you can use it with children as well as adults. Interesting the scent is closer to that of a bergamot oil and less like the tangerine it’s expected to smell like. Mandarin oil is a very successful treatment for sleep difficulties almost rivaling lavender.

7. Clary Sage – helps sooth, relax, and uplift the spirit.

Effects: Warming

8. Jasmine – helps sooth and relax, very beneficial for depression, insomnia, nervous tension, and stress

Effects of Jasmine: Soothing, Relaxing

9. Rosalina would be a mild and effective change for those not fond of Lavender or just tired of it. Rosalina is sometimes called “Lavender Tea Tree.”

10. Sandalwood does indeed come from wood. To get the right intensity of oil from the trees they must be at least forty years old, but the older the better and a tree eighty years old will produce better oils. Sandalwood is a calming agent; it relieves nervous tension and helps you relax.

Occasional side-effects of Aromatherapy: essential oils are very concentrated and some cause irritation if applied directly to the skin. They should always be diluted in a vegetable carrier oil before being applied to the skin. Contact with the eyes should also be avoided to prevent irritation. Some citrus oils can increase the skin’s sensitivity to light, making it more prone to pigmentation.

Have you been up most of the night because of your back pain? Are you desperate for a decent night of sleep? Back pain can cause you to have insomnia. Many patients I have were suffering from this problem. Many patients I personally have treated used to try everything and had bought many products, in the hope they could be comfortable enough to sleep. They were really praying to be able to sleep, but they could not because their sleep was interrupted because of their back. Some told me they felt like “Goldilocks” because they slept in all the beds in their house. Patients have also told me they had been sleeping on their couches or in their recliners for years, instead of sleeping in their beds. Sadly, they had not been able sleep with their spouses, for years, because of their back pain.

It is not uncommon for back pain to drive a patient to sleep in the recliner or on the dress up propped up with pillows, just to get some pain relief. It is common for some to sleep on the floor next to their bed, place boards under their mattress, or buy all different types of pillows: hard, soft, contour, and memory. Putting a body-pillow between the knees is a method many of my patients had tried. Sufferers that have tried everything are desperate and are praying they can just sleep.

Many people have tried heating pads, electric blankets, playing soothing composition, and leaving the television on – which can drive a spouse insane. They want to have some companionship while they are awake suffering. This is when back pain sufferers are tempted to order products from the late-night infomercials: diet programs, sleep aids, exercise equipment, inversion tables, vitamins and maybe even Ginsu knives. Anything that will promise a better life might be ordered. It is a viscous cycle that just does not seem to end because their pain is only the symptom of what could be a serious, underlying back problem.

There are temporary reasons for back pain. An example is a pregnant woman. Her back pain can be because of so much extra weight around her mid- section during the day. The same thing can take place from being overweight. Other reasons could be improper carrying to one side, anything from a heavy purse to a child riding on the hip, improper sitting, sitting while leaning and peering at a computer screen. The list goes on, because of our more sedentary lives.

If the pills do not help you, on the next visit when you see your doctor, he or she will probably tell you to go to a physical therapist. If you are still in pain, when you go back to your doctor again, then you may get to have X-rays or MRIs to map the actual diagnosis and exactly what is incorrect. If you are diagnosed with a herniated disc or degenerative disc disease, you may be referred to an orthopedic specialist or a neurologist. At that point, they could urge having an injection (epidural) which may help small-term: two months, two weeks, two days, or not at all.

If your pain continues, surgery may be recommended. After surgery, some patients are very disappointed because they still have pain and some of the previous symptoms. I call this process a “medical pipeline”.

This process is what I refer to as the “medical pipeline”, and it can continue. Post surgery, you may still have pain or similar symptoms as before. From here, you may continue to take pain medications and even see a pain specialist. Needless, to say some surgeries can be successful, and some surgeries are necessary, but, fusion-type surgeries have a shelf-life of two to five years, or less.

How hypnosis promotes sleep?
Hypnosis removes the obstacles to sleep while at the same time inducing brain wave patterns that promote and are conducive to sleep.

Hypnotherapy can help with getting to sleep by:

- Re-educating your mind to expect to enjoy a good night’s sleep
- Teaching new relaxation techniques to help your mind and body to slow down at the end of the day. Sleeping becomes much easier in this state.
- Helping you to learn techniques to remove some of the noise from a racing mind. -Insomnia and most sleep problems are a very modern phenomenon and representative of the pace of modern life
- Helping you to understand some of the causes of insomnia and sleeping problems.

Generally, hypnotherapy clients’ sleep problems fall into two categories. The first is simply not being able to fall asleep at night. The second involves waking up at an inconveniently early hour and not being able to fall asleep again. Learning effective self-hypnosis skills can help you to significantly improve your sleep patterns and can help with indirect effects of insomnia and sleep problems such as daytime anxiety and bruxism (teeth grinding during the night).

There are many hypnotic techniques to aid sleep and help you to consciously release control and allow sleep to happen. Self hypnosis techniques can be learned by use of a CD, audio tape, video tape and even through MP3 files you can obtain online. These products guide you through the steps and sequences necessary to relax deeply, enter the trance-like hypnotic state and allow your subconscious mind to absorb the suggestive message delivered by the product. After completion of the session, the product will provide a “count out” which simply means that it will state something like “after I count to five you will be awake but ready to go to bed and sleep through the night” or something similar.

Many people confuse insomnia hypnosis with meditation, guided imagery and visualization. They have similarities but are exactly the same. Meditation and guided imagery ask that you enter a relaxed state, but the state does not take you into a trance state as in hypnotism. Hypnosis is simply a deeper state of relaxing and freeing the mind. It could be called an altered state of reality, if you like.

The sound oasis sleep bear, sleep sheep plush sound machine, SleepMate 980A, and sleep sheep on the go are some good selections of machines for children.

When couples finally become parents, one of the most common challenges that they would face is putting their baby to sleep and the hard part is to maintain baby’s deep slumber for the rest of the night. Fortunately, parents wouldn’t have to worry about this dilemma because what they only need is a sound machine. These are simple inventions that produce particular “white” sounds or background noises like a heartbeat or a gentle flowing water. These sounds promote and maintain comfort and enable babies to sleep more soundly. Examples of the machine are listed below.

Sound oasis sleep bear

Babies and young kids would love this battery-operated sound machine because it is soft and cuddly in a form of a teddy bear. It has straps so that you can attach it to your baby’s stroller or crib during sleeping time. Its sound box can actually produce 6 comforting sounds like heart beat, lullaby, womb sound, and mores. It also has a timer setting which will enable to decide how many minutes of the sound will continuously play to ensure that your baby can fall into deeper sleep. It also has a volume control to adjust the sounds. What’s good about this product is that its sound box can be removed from the body so that you can be able to clean and wash the teddy bear.

Sleep sheep plush sound machine

This sound machine is more or less similar to the sound oasis sleep bear though it is in the form of a cute and cuddly sleeping sheep. Is has Velcro straps for easy attaching to cribs, walkers or bed posts. It also has 2 time settings or a sleep timer and volume control as well. Unlike the sleep bear that produces 6 white sounds, the sleep sheep plush only produces 4 soothing sounds like mother’s heartbeat, rain, ocean waves, and whale songs.

SleepMate 980A

The SleepMate 980A is a popular sound machine made by Marpac, a well-known white noise machine creator. This machine has a simple yet cool design, in oval form with a white casing. It is highly durable and lightweight. It produces excellent sound quality of smooth rushing air which refines disturbing environmental noise such as snoring, vehicle sounds, conversations, and noises from appliances. This machine is indeed very effective in calming babies and can also be used in the office or in adult bedrooms.

Sleep sheep on the go

This white noise machine is the compact version of the sleep sheep. With the same characteristics of the sleep sheep though only 8 inches tall, it is very convenient and can fit to almost any kind of bag. It produces 4 nature sounds like gentle stream, spring showers, ocean waves, and whale songs.

A sound machine is a very good investment that every mother should have. It is not only advantageous to the parents but it also guarantees a good night sleep to your child.

Sleepwalking is a menace that occurs when you are sleeping or are seemingly asleep. It is basically associated with other activities together with sleep, such as walking or agitated running. Sometimes sleepwalking may also be associated with nonsensical talks. While the disease has several triggers behind the same, some preventive measures are also there to combat the sleepwalking.

The age group that is most vulnerable

Sleepwalking mostly hits people in their middle childhood and young adolescence. So, it is not an uncommon disease among children, hitting about 15% of tots in the age group of 4 to 12 years. But the good news is that the disease wane by late adolescence. However, the displeasing news about it is that 10% of the teens continue to be victims of the same.

Stages of sleep when sleepwalking occur

The medical fraternity of the world has given us information that sleep is broadly segregated into five distinct stages. While the stages 1, 2, 3 and 4 are characterized by non-rapid eye movement the last stage that is the 5th stage is marked by REM or rapid eye movement. It is the phase associated with dreaming and subsequent release of hormones required for growth and metabolism. Each of the stages lasts for 90 to 100 minutes, making up for your whole night’s sleep. Sleepwalking is predominant in the 3rd and 4th stage. But the most amusing part of it is that sleepwalking never occurs during short naps or noon siesta as the full cycle does not get completed during that short span. Ridiculously, the sleepwalker does not have any memory of his behaviors during the act when he/she wakes up.

Symptoms of sleepwalking

The most predominant symptom of sleepwalking is that the eyes of the victim remain open with a characteristic glassy appeal.

Whatever the sleepwalker does in that phase, appear to be clumsy and uncontrolled. In case he/she is interrogated in that circumstance, the victim either remains unresponsive or replies in nonsensical phraseology.

In case of adults, the next stage of waking up from this queer sleep is followed by embarrassment of the victim, while bedwetting in cases of some kids. The victim remains totally indifferent about whatever he/she has done during the phase.

The factors connected with sleep walking

There are several factors that have been connected to sleep walking. If you inquire a skilled medical professional, he/she see with pinpoint at one of these factors behind the same. The four primary factors are genetic, environmental, medical and physiological.

Genetic factors

It has been found that people with the family history of a first degree sleepwalking relative are more vulnerable to the same. Likewise, in case of identical twins, one affected with the same will, in majority of the cases, lead the other susceptible to sleepwalking too.

Environmental factors

This factor, in its umbrella, includes a lot of sub factors. An altered lifestyle, characterized with deprivation of adequate sleep, frequent fever, tremendous mental and physical stress and disturbed sleep schedule can encourage the occurrence of sleepwalking.

Similarly some drugs and their side effects also work as catalysts. For instance, antihistamines, tranquilizers, sedatives, neuroleptics and stimulants are major ones that make a person open to the same. Magnesium deficiency and over-intoxication of alcohol can also lead to sleepwalking.

Physiological factors

Especially in teens and tots, the length and depth of slow wave sleep often forms the major factor of sleepwalking. Sometimes pregnant women also develop sleepwalking behavior while they are still carrying the baby. One of the queerest premenstrual symptoms is sleepwalking too.

Medical conditions often make a patient exposed to the threats of sleepwalking too. The most common ones among them are abnormal heart rhythms or arrhythmias, as it is called, gastroesophageal reflux, nighttime asthma, panic attacks, stress disorder and obstructive sleep apnea.

Diagnosis of sleep walking

An observational test is enough to determine whether a patient suffers from sleepwalking or not. However, sometimes doctors also carry out some medical evaluations to indentify if there is a medical history behind the occurrence of sleepwalking or not. Psychological test is also conducted to rule out any possibility of factors like anxiety, stress and phobia behind the same. But, sometimes the tests fail to show any considerable results. On the contrary, observational tests may hint at the prevalence of the disease in an individual. The doctors take the resort of sleep study tests in such extremely emergency cases to identify the triggers behind the disease, so that subsequent treatments could be done.

Conditions taken into account while diagnosing sleepwalking

Sometimes symptoms like night terrors, nocturnal seizures, confusional arousal overlap with the predominant symptoms of sleepwalking. Thus, these factors are mostly taken into consideration, especially while diagnosing young children and individuals in their mid adolescence, to identify if a patient is really a sleepwalker or not.

Confusional arousal

This is also a characteristic night arousal associated with violent and terrorized felling. But unlike sleepwalking or night arousal if is marked by increased autonomic nervous patterns, such as increased heartbeat, dilated pupils, profuse sweating, etc. along with coherency in speech.

Night terror

This has resemblance with sleepwalking in the manner that it occurs in the 1st half of nightly sleep. They also occur in the 3rd and 4th stages of sleep. But, it is associated with violent and terrified behavior unlike sleep walking.

Nocturnal seizures

Although this might bear an apparent resemblance with sleepwalking, nocturnal seizure is different from the same as it is brief and repetitive in nature. It occurs mostly in the 2nd phase of sleep cycle and is always associated with postictal complications, such as hard to arouse, headache, incontinence, etc.

Prevention and remedy

The thumb rules for preventing the occurrence of sleepwalking is to lessen mental stress, avoid extreme fatigue and totally quit alcohol and central nervous system depressants.

Remedy of the disease exists in the form of adequate sleep, meditation to soothe the nerves, medical aids like antidepressants, benzodiazepines and clonazepum.

While sleepwalking is mostly reduced with age, but care should be taken to reach out for the medical advice in time. We can hardly overlook the risk factors associated with the disease, which makes the sufferer susceptible to the gravest of consequence during the act, such as fatal injury, and loss of balance.

Sleep apnea means “cessation of breath.” It is characterized by repetitive episodes of upper airway obstruction that occur during sleep, usually associated with a reduction in blood oxygen saturation. In other words, the airway becomes obstructed at several possible sites. The upper airway can be obstructed by excess tissue in the airway, large tonsils, a large tongue and usually includes the airway muscles relaxing and collapsing when asleep. Another site of obstruction can be the nasal passages. Sometimes the structure of the jaw and airway can be a factor in sleep apnea.

About 50% of adults over the age of 65 have some type of sleep disorder, although it is not clear whether this is a norm

You might remember your mother giving you a glass of hot milk previous to bedtime to help you sleep. Studies have shown that a little milk can help you sleep better. And it’s not just milk either. There are a host of common foods that can help you get to sleep – and stay asleep – easier.

Here are a few good night foods:

Tryptophan-rich foods

Out of all essential amino acids, the most research has been carried out by nutritional researchers on tryptophan. It is also known as a sleep-inducing amino acid.

Tryptophan is a substance in certain foods that the body converts to an amino acid called L-tryptophan. This amino acid in turn helps the body produce the brain chemical serotonin, which many call the “sleep hormone.” Serotonin induces deeper and more restful sleep. (Strictly speaking, serotonin is not a hormone; it is a neurotransmitter.)

Foods rich in tryptophan include milk (hence the popular bedtime habit), cheese, eggs, nuts, fish, and beans. These are protein-rich foods, so they should be easy to remember when you’re deciding what to have for a bedtime snack.

Foods rich in carbohydrates

Eating food high in carbohydrates, especially four hours before bedtime, could make you sleep quicker. These include rice, breads, pasta, milk products, potatoes, and maybe a bit of fruit pie, banana, cake, or ice cream for dessert. Such foods also help release serotonin.

But it’s important to remember not to go to bed on a full stomach. When your digestive system is in full swing, it’s difficult for the rest of your body to settle down. If you’d like to sleep better at night, have dinner two to four hours before bedtime.

Here’s a few more tips to help you get all the sleep you need:

- Avoid caffeine. This one’s a no-brainer, but not taking any caffeine several hours before bedtime makes it easier to fall asleep. If you’re sensitive to caffeine (or if coffee makes you feel jittery and on edge), you might want to swear off all coffee, or at least eight hours before going to bed. (Paradoxically, some people seem to sleep better after consuming caffeine.)

- Don’t drink any fluids before going to bed. This might go against the habit of having a glass of milk before bedtime, but if you find yourself getting up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, it might be a good idea. It takes 90 minutes for the body to process any fluids, so keep this in mind if you want to sleep through the night.

- Avoid alcohol. Some people take some alcohol to get drowsy, but alcohol tends to cause restless sleep. The calming effect of alcohol also wears off after only a few hours, so you’re likely to wake up in the middle of the night
