As people we spend about a third of our lives sleeping and so throughout history a comfortable place to rest and rejuvenate has been of paramount importance. Here are a few interesting facts which you might not have heard before about bed frames back in time…

At the beginning of recorded history we believe that beds were little more than piles of leaves, straw or some other natural material used simply to lift the user away from the dirt and cold drafts directly on the floor. However from as long ago as 3200BC there are remains of stone bed frames built in a box shape and likely to have been filled with soft materials for comfort. As we progress through time more sophisticated beds are in evidence: the ancient Egyptians had high sleeping platforms which were reached by steps, and some of the wealthiest even had carved wooden bed frames which were frequently highly decorated.

In later times throughout Europe many beds had curtains or animal skins hung around them for warmth as well as privacy. This remained the case for a long time until the fashion changed so that drapes became more decorative and less functional and were often just around the head end of the bed frame. These days the decadence of the four poster bed that we would recognise from this period in history is back in fashion, however they do not suit everyone, or every home for that matter.

Practically every parent goes through the conundrum of getting a child out of mom and dad’s bed and into their own. While you do not want your young one to feel isolated, everyone in the house needs a good night’s sleep. Many parents find these two goals to be impossible to accomplish simultaneously. Feelings of guilt and frustration coursing through your stomach and brain late at night certainly do not help in finding a solution.

But you can solve the problem. You can get your child use to sleeping in herChild In Your Bed How To Keep Your Child In Your Bed room. The key is consistency and patience. Without executing those two fundamentals, chances of success become nil.

Below are some tips for getting your child to sleep in their own room:

* Make sure it’s the time is right. Would you adopt a new puppy and expect to crate train her in a few days, then go on vacation or come home with a new baby? Your answer is likely, no, you wouldn’t. Start your new routine when you have at least a few weeks to get your child familiar with the new routine.

* Get rid of excuses. Okay, so you can’t possibly plan for every contingency. What you can do is limit the possibilities. Have your child take a potty-break before bed. Give him a sip of water. Make sure there is enough warm bedding in the winter and fans on during the summer. If your child has monsters living under the bed or in the closet, “kill” them nightly.

In addition, make sure the room is conducive to sleeping. If your child likes the glow of a night light, turn one on. If your child likes stuffed animals to surround her while sleeping, don’t deprive her.

* Be strong. This is the hardest part of getting your child to sleep in his own room. Children coming into your room at 3 am want to be engaged. Don’t speak to them if unnecessary. Instead, simply pick him up and quietly place him in his bed. Repeat as many times as necessary. Speaking to your child or cuddling will only reinforce the behavior.

* Be positive. You will get frustrated. You will be tired. You need to stay positive. Staying positive means reinforcing good behavior. Give your child a sticker for staying in bed each morning. Let them tuck-in their favorite stuffed animal and/or imaginary friend. You child has active imagination, play to it. Allowing your child a sense of autonomy will do wonders.

* Do not feed their defiance. Laying down with your child should be avoided. If you do, only lay for a few moments. Don’t give into whining. You had to ignore it when they were much younger. Now is not the time to make a U-turn.

* Establish a nighttime routine. Parents reading this might say, “Thank you Captain Obvious!” But it is crucial to have a routine. Children learn through structure. A memorable nightly routine will help your child adjust to sleeping alone. Keep it simple. Get a bath, go potty, read a book and say prayers. End it with a kiss goodnight. Each part of the routine should further sooth and relax your child.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to get your child to sleep in their own room. But with a bit of common sense and a lot of consistency, you can achieve wonders.

If you find yourself in a situation where your budget won’t allow you to purchase a memory foam mattress and you need a bed now, Aero beds, inflatable mattresses or portable beds may be the answer. Likewise, perhaps you are you are saving your funds to purchase a Tempurpedic bed, and need something in the meantime. In some cases you may not have enough floor space for another permanent traditional bed

Aero Beds have a number of advantages over a memory foam mattress in

aerobeds All about Aero Beds

these situations. Areo beds when deflated compact into a comparatively small package for ease of storage. In addition, a top quality air bed is priced a lot lower than a good memory foam mattress, with a number of them costing under $100. Their cost is several hundred dollars below the cheapest visco bed that is acceptable and we can recommend.

What factors should you take into consideration when buying quality inflatable air beds: *The thicker the material the better and longer the bed will last. The reason for this is that thicker material resists punctures better than thinner material. *How loud is the motor? In the event your guests have to add air in the middle of the night, will the motor wake everyone else up? *How fast does it inflate and deflate? A good standard for inflation and deflation is within 2 – 3 minutes. *Is the motor built into the bed or separate? Can someone in the bed operate the controls that adjust the firmness or do they have to get out of the bed?

The top complaint regarding air beds is that folks complain that they leak and are half deflated by morning. Becoming half deflated is normal for air beds. If you remember from science class, warm air will expand and take up more volume, while cool air contracts and takes up less volume. If you blow up an air bed with warm afternoon air, by 3 am the air will have cooled and contracted. This means the air will take up much less volume, and the bed partially deflates. The solution to this is either blow up the bed up when it is cool, or be ready to pump more air into the bed during cold nights.

It is a good idea to test your air beds (or aero beds) as soon as you receive them. If you do this right away, you will know right away if you have a defective unit, and you can start the return process. Here’s how to test your new bed: Open up the package and lay the bed out to warm the bed to room temp. Fill the bed slowly to about half full, then let it sit for an hour. Next add more air until the bed is almost firm. You want the bed to be about 80 percent full. Then leave it alone overnight. The next day, fill it until its firm and leave it alone another night before using it, or deflating it and putting it away for storage. You should know by then if you have a defective unit or not. Once again I have woken up really tired this morning, and cross with myself for not going to bed sooner last night. It always seems to happen when my husband is working away – there is something about a cold, empty bed which just doesn’t hold much appeal. It is typical as well that on the nights when I stay up late the children also wake me up in the night and get up early the next morning, leaving me exhausted and with the distinct feeling that I have burnt the candle at both ends – and in the middle.

If you, like me, have a tendency to put off heading for the comfort of yourOrthopaedic Double Mattress 300x172 Stop Putting Off Going To Bed mattresses at the end of the evening then have a think about what is stopping you and try to break the bad habit. With me it is ultimately down to not liking sleeping alone, so I convince myself that I really need to watch whatever late night show is on television at the time, or that I must read another chapter of my latest novel. My other favourite excuse to myself is that I have been working late and therefore need to relax a bit before bedtime – conveniently missing the point that going to bed is relaxing in itself!

What is making you put off going to your beds? Maybe you think your mind will be whirling with thoughts and stop you from resting, or maybe you are having far too nice a time out and about with friends – even though you know it is a ‘school’ night. Unfortunately it is far too easy to talk yourself into a late night not mattering and push aside thoughts of how you might feel the next morning. My suggestion to you is that the next time you are having that twilight conversation with yourself, be kind to your goodie-goodie side and let them win! Head to bed and feel the benefit in the morning.
